Victoria Collage
A six- by four-foot memory floats on the wall of the Sissons Room at Victoria College. Here is time captured in lace, ribbons, beads, broken glass, computer print-outs, paint and tinsel, coloured paper and seersucker.

While modern-day cardboard students rush to class, a much-loved and missed professor, J. D. Robins of English (1884-1952), plays golf in the attic. Word has it that he and his colleague, the poet E. J. Pratt, practised their game here.

Elsewhere a water fountain sprays crystals snipped from an old evening gown, and a stone archway harbouring a young Queen Victoria is rendered in dressmaker's braid.

Of all the artwork belonging to the university, there is nothing quite like M. L. Knight's Victoria Collage. Sarcastic and mischievous, gentle and loving, this creation proves, if you look very closely, that a picture is indeed worth a thousand words. Commissioned by the Victoria University Art Committee, it was completed in 1992, on the 100th anniversary of the Old Vic Building.
